From Dirt to the Table

Hi, I'm Rob.

What started as a love of cooking quickly turned into a curiosity about where great food comes from. The more I learned, the more I realized that food is about much more than what's on the plate. It's the ingredients, the people who produce them, the skills used to prepare them and the stories that bring it all together.

Today, I'm exploring food, culture and adventure through cooking, growing ingredients, learning practical skills and discovering where great food comes from. Some things work, some things don't, but every experience is an opportunity to learn something new.

As a veteran living with a physical disability and chronic pain, leaving the workforce was a major change. I needed a new challenge and a reason to keep moving forward. What I found was that learning, creating and building things with my own hands gave me a renewed sense of purpose.

I'm not an expert, a professional chef or someone with all the answers. I'm simply learning by doing and sharing the journey, including the successes, the setbacks and everything in between.

My goal is simple: discover great food, learn new skills and create a place where people feel welcome around the table.

Lavastone Farm

Nestled in Victoria's Central Highlands, Lavastone Farm is the place my wife and I call home. When we first moved here, the property was scattered with piles of volcanic rock, inspiring the name that would eventually become part of our story.

What began with a tiny home and a patch of land has gradually evolved into something more. We're taking things one step at a time, improving the property, creating spaces to gather, and building a life that feels connected to the things that matter most.

Life here is shared with a cast of animals who are very much part of the family and the daily rhythm of the property. That includes our dogs, Clementine the Maremma and Marty McFly the Cavalier, our cats Indiana Jones and Ripley Weaver, a flock of chickens better known as "The Nuggets", goats Thelma & Louise and Luke & Leia, and sheep Hitchcock and Scully.

Lavastone Farm isn't a finished destination. It's a place that's constantly evolving, shaped by new ideas, hard work and plenty of lessons along the way. We're really only just getting started.

Remembering Kenji

Kenji was my support dog and my shadow. As a Siberian Husky, he was by my side through doctor's appointments, tough days and countless jobs around the property.

No matter what was going on, he always seemed to know when I needed him most.    Even though he's no longer here, he's still a big part of my journey forward. I can still picture him lying nearby while I was cooking, waiting for a taste test, or following me from one project to the next.

He may be gone, but he'll always be part of this journey.

Rest easy, buddy.
